RCU Government
Post Graduate College was created by Uttar Pradesh Government on 30th June 1969
with three subjects viz. Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at undergraduate
level and 20 students to cater the students of remote and border district. This
was the only college at that time which was opened by the Government of Uttar
Pradesh to serve higher education facilities in such remote district. Botany was
introduced as a subject at undergraduate level in 1971. The Post Graduate
classes were started in the college from 1975. Starting with only one faculty
member in 1969, this college now have six faculty member department and serving
Botany as subject at under-graduate, Post Graduate, Doctoral and Post Doctoral
level. Various known faculty and plant scientists, namely Prof. S.P. Singh,
Prof. G.S. Rajwar, Prof. Suteri, Prof. S.K. Gupta, Prof. G.C. Ghildiyal, and
Prof. A.K. Agrawal, flourish this department. Various Ph.D. students completed
their research work in this department and now serving in different reputed
positions in the state and outside as well. Presently, department is catered by
five faculty members.
CBCS system was
introduced by H.N.B. Garhwal University, Srinagar (affiliating University) in
2012 at Post Graduate level and in 2015 at Under-Graduate level to provide
choice to the students to study various special papers of diverse nature.
Started with only 11 students in 1971, this department now serving to 180
sanctioned seats at undergraduate and Post Graduate level. The department now
have three ICT enabled laboratories, one research laboratory, one museum, one
instrumentation laboratory, one tissue culture laboratory and one in-situ
collection of botanically important plants. Two research projects are presently
running in the department under supervision of Dr. Arun K. Agrawal, present Head
of the Department, sponsored by Department of Science and Technology and G.B.
Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development. One Post Doctoral
fellow is also working in the department with financial assistance from UGC, New
Delhi. The present total strength of the students in the department is as

All faculty members of the department are actively engaged in teaching and
research activities. They have published a number of research papers in national
and international research journals. In year 2016, the department organized one
national seminar on “CROP DIVERSITY AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT IN
HIMALAYAN ENVIRONMENT”, that was attended by more than 200 faculty members,
scientists and research scholars of national repute institutions. One day
seminar on “Challanges and Opportunity in Agriculture and Rural Development in
Uttarkashi” with association with DIBER, Haldwani, (Nainital) was organized by
the department in year 2017. One day seminar on Intellectual Property Rights was
also organized by the department in association with Uttarakhand state Council
of Science and Technology, Dehradun.
